Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राम इति उक्त्वा च वचनम् वाष्प पर्याकुल ईक्षणः ।
शशाक नृपतिर् दीनो न ईक्षितुम् न अभिभाषितुम् ॥२-१८-३॥
Rāma iti uktvā ca vacanam vāṣpa paryākula īkṣaṇaḥ । Śaśāka nṛpatir dīno na īkṣitum na abhibhāṣitum ॥ ॥2-18-3॥
Translation
Saying only the word "Rama," the miserable King, his eyes filled with tears, could neither look at him nor speak to him further.
हिंदी अनुवाद
आँसुओं से भरी हुई आँखों वाले दीन महाराज दशरथ केवल "राम"—बस इतना ही शब्द कह सके। वे न तो राम की ओर देख सके और न ही उनसे (आगे) कुछ बात कर सके।
English Commentary
This verse depicts Dasharatha’s utter helplessness and guilt. The burden of having to banish the very son he intended to crown chokes him. Na īkṣitum (could not look)—he cannot meet Rama's eyes due to intense shame and heartbreak. Uttering only the name "Rama" signifies that his son is his entire world, yet he is bound by his boons to destroy that world. It is a poignant portrayal of a father paralyzed by the conflict between his love for his son and his duty to keep his word.

यह श्लोक दशरथ की असमर्थता और ग्लानि को चित्रित करता है। जिस पुत्र को राज्य देने का वचन दिया था, उसे अब वनवास का आदेश देना है—यह विचार ही दशरथ का कंठ अवरुद्ध कर रहा है। 'न ईक्षितुम्'—वे राम से आँखें नहीं मिला पा रहे क्योंकि वे स्वयं को अपराधी मान रहे हैं। केवल "राम" शब्द निकलना यह बताता है कि उनका पूरा अस्तित्व अपने पुत्र के प्रेम में है, लेकिन परिस्थितियाँ (वचन) उन्हें काट रही हैं। यह एक पिता की विवशता का चरम है।
