Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तत् अपूर्वम् नर पतेर् दृष्ट्वा रूपम् भय आवहम् ।
रामः अपि भयम् आपन्नः पदा स्पृष्ट्वा इव पन्नगम् ॥२-१८-४॥
Tat apūrvam nara pater dṛṣṭvā rūpam bhaya āvaham । Rāmaḥ api bhayam āpannaḥ padā spṛṣṭvā iva pannagam ॥ ॥2-18-4॥
Translation
Seeing that unprecedented and frightening appearance of the King, even Rama became terrified, just as one who has accidentally stepped on a snake.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राजा के उस अपूर्व (जो पहले कभी न देखा गया हो) और भय उत्पन्न करने वाले रूप को देखकर राम भी उसी प्रकार भयभीत हो गए, जैसे कोई पैर से सांप को छू जाने पर डर जाता है।
English Commentary
Rama, who is fearless in battle against demons, is described here as being terrified. This fear is not for his own safety but arises from the shock of seeing his father's condition. The simile of "stepping on a snake" captures the sudden, sharp jolt of alarm. He has never seen his father in such a state—broken, withered, and silent—hence it is apūrvam (unprecedented). It signifies the dread of an unknown calamity. The sheer anomaly of the situation shakes even a man of Rama’s fortitude.

राम, जो युद्ध में बड़े-बड़े राक्षसों से नहीं डरते, आज 'भयभीत' हैं। यह भय अपनी सुरक्षा के लिए नहीं, बल्कि पिता की स्थिति को लेकर है। उपमा 'पदा स्पृष्ट्वा इव पन्नगम्' (जैसे पैर सांप पर पड़ गया हो) उस 'आकस्मिक झटके' (shock) को दर्शाती है जो राम को लगा। उन्होंने पिता को क्रोध में देखा होगा, युद्ध में देखा होगा, लेकिन ऐसा 'दीन' और 'टूटा हुआ' रूप पहले कभी नहीं देखा ('अपूर्वम्')। यह अनिष्ट की आशंका का भय है जो राम जैसे धीर पुरुष को भी कम्पित कर देता है।
