Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पुरा देव असुरे युद्धे पित्रा ते मम राघव ।
रक्षितेन वरौ दत्तौ सशल्येन महा रणे ॥ ॥२-१८-३२॥
purā deva asure yuddhe pitrā te mama rāghava |
rakṣitena varau dattau saśalyena mahā raṇe ॥2-18-32॥
Translation
O Raghava! Long ago, in the great war between the Devas and Asuras, your father, wounded by arrows, was saved by me; and (in return) two boons were granted to me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राघव! प्राचीन काल में देवासुर संग्राम के महारयुद्ध में, जब तुम्हारे पिता घायल (सशल्य) हो गए थे, तब मैंने उनकी रक्षा की थी और उन्होंने मुझे दो वर दिए थे।
English Commentary
Kaikeyi provides the legal and moral basis for her demand. She recounts the Devasura war where she saved Dasharatha's life when he was sashalya (pierced by arrows/wounded). By invoking this history, she establishes that the boons are a debt the King owes her for saving his life, not a whimsical gift. Addressing Rama as "Raghava" (descendant of Raghu), she subtly reminds him of his lineage's reputation for honoring promises and debts, making it impossible for him to dismiss her claim.

कैकेयी अब अपनी मांग की पृष्ठभूमि (background) तैयार कर रही हैं। वह देवासुर संग्राम की घटना याद दिलाती हैं जहाँ उन्होंने राजा दशरथ के प्राण बचाए थे। 'सशल्येन' का अर्थ है जब राजा के शरीर में बाण/शस्त्र धंसे हुए थे। यह याद दिलाकर वह यह सिद्ध करना चाहती हैं कि ये वर उन्होंने राजा की प्राण रक्षा के बदले कमाए थे, यह कोई भीख नहीं थी। यह उनका अधिकार है। वह राम को यह बता रही हैं कि राजा पर उनका पुराना ऋण (कर्ज) है जिसे चुकाने का समय अब आया है।
