स निदेशे पितुस् तिष्ठ यथा तेन प्रतिश्रुतम् ।
त्वया अरण्यम् प्रवेष्टव्यम् नव वर्षाणि पन्च च ॥२-१८-३५॥
sa nideśe pitus tiṣṭha yathā tena pratiśrutam |
tvayā araṇyam praveṣṭavyam nava varṣāṇi panca ca ॥2-18-35॥
Translation
Abide by the command of your father, just as was promised by him. You must enter the forest for nine plus five (fourteen) years.

जैसा कि पिता ने प्रतिज्ञा की है, तुम उनके आदेश का पालन करो। तुम्हें नौ और पाँच (चौदह) वर्षों के लिए वन में प्रवेश करना होगा।
English Commentary
Kaikeyi explicitly outlines the terms of the exile without ambiguity. The phrasing 'nine plus five years' specifies the fourteen-year duration. This specific timeframe is politically significant; in ancient traditions, a long absence (often fourteen years) could solidify a change in regime and potentially forfeit the original heir's claim to the throne. Kaikeyi ensures that Bharata has ample time to establish his rule without Rama's influence. By framing this as abiding by the father's command (nideshe pitus tishtha), she leaves no room for negotiation, presenting the exile as a fait accompli based on the King's prior vow.
