एतेन त्वां नरेन्द्रोयम् कारुण्येन समाप्लुतः ।
शोकसंक्लिष्टवदनो न शक्नोति निरीक्षितुम् ॥२-१८-३९॥
etena tvāṃ narendro'yam kāruṇyena samāplutaḥ |
śokasaṃkliṣṭavadano na śaknoti nirīkṣitum ॥2-18-39॥
Translation
It is for this reason that the King is overwhelmed with compassion; with his face withered by grief, he is unable to even look at you.

इसी कारण से ये महाराज करुणा से भर गए हैं और शोक से मुरझाए हुए मुख वाले होकर तुम्हारी ओर देख भी नहीं पा रहे हैं।
English Commentary
King Dasharatha is rendered mute by shock and shame, unable to face his beloved son. Kaikeyi interprets this silence to her advantage. She explains the King's inability to look at Rama not as disagreement or coercion, but as being 'overwhelmed by compassion' (karunyena samaplutah). She suggests that the King intends to keep his promise but is too soft-hearted to deliver the harsh news himself. By framing Dasharatha’s agony as mere sentimental hesitation, she takes the agency of speech away from him, ensuring Rama hears the verdict from her, undistorted by the King's potential retraction or emotional breakdown.

राजा दशरथ मौन हैं और राम की ओर देखने में असमर्थ हैं। कैकेयी इस स्थिति की व्याख्या अपने पक्ष में करती हैं। वह कहती हैं कि राजा का मौन उनकी 'करुणा' (राम के प्रति मोह) के कारण है, न कि इसलिए कि वे कैकेयी की मांग से असहमत हैं। वह दशरथ की विवशता को राम के समक्ष ऐसे प्रस्तुत करती हैं मानो राजा वचन तो पूरा करना चाहते हैं, परंतु पुत्र-मोह के कारण कह नहीं पा रहे। यह कूटनीति है—वह राजा की लज्जा और ग्लानि को 'दया' का नाम देकर राम को यह समझा रही हैं कि कठोर निर्णय लिया जा चुका है, बस उसे कहने की शक्ति राजा में नहीं है।
