Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इन्द्रियैः अप्रहृष्टैः तम् शोक सन्ताप कर्शितम् ।
निःश्वसन्तम् महा राजम् व्यथित आकुल चेतसम् ॥२-१८-५॥
Indriyaiḥ aprahṛṣṭaiḥ tam śoka santāpa karśitam । Niḥśvasantam mahā rājam vyathita ākula cetasam ॥ ॥2-18-5॥
Translation
(Rama saw) the Great King with his senses devoid of luster, withered by grief and burning anguish, sighing heavily, and with a mind that was pained and agitated.

(राम ने देखा कि) महाराज की इन्द्रियाँ कांतिहीन हो गई हैं, वे शोक और संताप से सूख गए हैं, लंबी साँसें ले रहे हैं और उनका चित्त अत्यंत व्यथित और व्याकुल है।
English Commentary
Valmiki provides a clinical description of Dasharatha’s psychosomatic distress. Indriyaiḥ aprahṛṣṭaiḥ implies his senses have lost their vitality; his eyes are dull, his presence faded. Niḥśvasantam (sighing heavily) is a classic symptom of deep depression or cardiac distress. Dasharatha, the "Great King" and ruler of the earth, is reduced to a trembling shell by the conflict between his love for Rama and his obligation to truth. It illustrates the devastating physical toll of extreme emotional trauma.

वाल्मीकि जी यहाँ दशरथ की शारीरिक और मानसिक व्याधि का विस्तृत वर्णन करते हैं। 'इन्द्रियैः अप्रहृष्टैः' का अर्थ है कि आँखों में चमक नहीं है, चेहरे पर ओज नहीं है। 'निःश्वसन्तम्' (लंबी आहें भरना) गहरे अवसाद का लक्षण है। राजा दशरथ, जो 'महाराज' हैं और पृथ्वी के शासक हैं, इस समय एक साधारण मनुष्य की भांति शोक के अधीन हैं। यह दर्शाता है कि मोह और सत्यपाश (वचन-बंधन) का द्वंद्व कितना विनाशकारी हो सकता है।
