चिन्तयाम् आस च तदा रामः पितृ हिते रतः ।
किम्स्विद् अद्य एव नृपतिर् न माम् प्रत्यभिनन्दति ॥२-१८-८॥
Cintayām āsa ca tadā rāmaḥ pitṛ hite rataḥ । Kimsvid adya eva nṛpatir na mām pratyabhinandati ॥ ॥2-18-8॥
Translation
Then Rama, who was always intent on his father's welfare, thought: "Why is it that the King does not greet me happily today of all days?"

सदा पिता के हित में लगे रहने वाले राम तब सोचने लगे—"क्या कारण है कि आज ही महाराज मेरा अभिनंदन (स्वागत) नहीं कर रहे हैं?"
English Commentary
The epithet pitṛ hite rataḥ (devoted to his father's welfare) is key. Rama is not concerned about a snub to his ego, but is genuinely confused by his father's behavior. "Today of all days" (adya eva) underscores the irony—this should be the happiest day. Rama, innocent of the conspiracy hatched by Manthara and Kaikeyi, cannot fathom why the King is silent. He searches for a reason, unsuspecting that he himself (or rather, his exile) is the cause of this sorrow.

राम का विशेषण 'पितृ हिते रतः' (पिता के हित में लीन) महत्वपूर्ण है। राम को अपने अपमान की चिंता नहीं है, बल्कि वे पिता के व्यवहार से चिंतित हैं। 'अद्य एव' (आज ही के दिन)—यह प्रश्न उनकी उलझन को गहरा करता है। आज राज्याभिषेक का दिन है, आज तो राजा को सबसे अधिक प्रसन्न होना चाहिए था। राम निर्दोष हैं, उन्हें षड्यंत्र का आभास नहीं है, इसलिए वे राजा की चुप्पी का कारण समझ नहीं पा रहे हैं। यह उनकी सरलता और निष्छलता को दर्शाता है।
