Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अन्यदा माम् पिता दृष्ट्वा कुपितः अपि प्रसीदति ।
तस्य माम् अद्य सम्प्रेक्ष्य किम् आयासः प्रवर्तते ॥२-१८-९॥
Anyadā mām pitā dṛṣṭvā kupitaḥ api prasīdati । Tasya mām adya samprekṣya kim āyāsaḥ pravartate ॥ ॥2-18-9॥
Translation
"At other times, even if angry, my father would become pleased upon seeing me. Why then does seeing me today cause him such distress?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"अन्य दिनों में तो पिताजी कुपित होने पर भी मुझे देखकर प्रसन्न हो जाते थे। (किंतु) आज मुझे देखकर उन्हें यह कैसा दुःख (आयास) हो रहा है?"
English Commentary
Rama analyzes the situation based on past experience. He knows he has always been a source of joy for Dasharatha; his mere presence would normally pacify the King's anger. However, today the dynamic has inverted—Rama’s presence seems to trigger the King's anguish. He wonders, "Why does seeing me cause him pain (āyāsaḥ)?" He fails to understand that today, he is not the solution to the King's problem, but the subject of the King's tragic dilemma. This reflects the heartbreaking irony of the moment.

राम अपने मन में विश्लेषण कर रहे हैं। उनका अनुभव रहा है कि वे पिता के लिए 'शामक' (soothing agent) का कार्य करते हैं। उनका दर्शन दशरथ के क्रोध को भी शांत कर देता था। लेकिन आज स्थिति उल्टी है—राम का आना ही राजा के दुःख का कारण बन रहा है। 'किम् आयासः' (यह कैसा कष्ट/थकान है?)—राम यह नहीं समझ पा रहे हैं कि जो दवा (राम का सान्निध्य) हमेशा काम करती थी, आज वह जहर का काम क्यों कर रही है। यह मनोवैज्ञानिक द्वंद्व राम को व्याकुल कर रहा है।
