Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न अहम् अर्थ परः देवि लोकम् आवस्तुम् उत्सहे ।
विद्धि माम् ऋषिभिस् तुल्यम् केवलम् धर्मम् आस्थितम् ॥२-१९-२०॥
na aham artha paraḥ devi lokam āvastum utsahe |
viddhi mām ṛṣibhis tulyam kevalam dharmam āsthitam ॥2-19-20॥
Translation
"O Queen, I am not devoted to material wealth, nor do I wish to live in this world for that sake. Know me to be equal to the Rishis, established in Dharma alone."

"हे देवि! मैं धन या ऐश्वर्य का लोभी नहीं हूँ, न ही मैं (केवल भोग के लिए) इस संसार में रहना चाहता हूँ। मुझे ऋषियों के तुल्य और केवल धर्म में स्थित जानो।"
English Commentary
This is a definitive verse regarding Rama's ethos. He dispels any notion that he might cling to power out of greed (artha para). He declares his nature to be equal to that of the Sages (Rishibhis tulyam), implying that though he wears royal robes, his heart is that of an ascetic. He is grounded solely in Dharma. This statement elevates his acceptance of exile from mere obedience to a philosophical stance. He is not losing anything because he never craved the material possession of the world in the first place; his only pursuit is righteousness.

यह रामचरित का एक बीज-मंत्र (Key verse) है। राम यहाँ अपने जीवन दर्शन को स्पष्ट करते हैं। कैकेयी को शायद यह भय था कि राम राज्य के लिए लड़ेंगे क्योंकि वे 'अर्थ-पर' (धन/सत्ता के लोभी) हैं। राम इस भ्रम को तोड़ते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि उनका जीवन 'ऋषियों' जैसा है—त्यागमय और तपस्वी। वे केवल 'धर्म' के लिए जीते हैं। यदि धर्म राज्य त्यागने में है, तो वे राज्य त्याग देंगे; यदि धर्म राज्य करने में होता, तो वे करते। राम स्पष्ट करते हैं कि उनके लिए अयोध्या का सिंहासन और वन की घास एक समान है, यदि वह धर्म सम्मत हो।
