न हि अतः धर्म चरणम् किम्चित् अस्ति महत्तरम् ।
यथा पितरि शुश्रूषा तस्य वा वचन क्रिया ॥२-१९-२२॥
na hi ataḥ dharma caraṇam kimcit asti mahattaram |
yathā pitari śuśrūṣā tasya vā vacana kriyā ॥2-19-22॥
Translation
"For there is no practice of Dharma greater than this: service to the father, or doing what he commands."

"क्योंकि पिता की सेवा करने अथवा उनके वचनों का पालन करने से बढ़कर दूसरा कोई महान धर्म नहीं है।"
English Commentary
Rama provides the doctrinal basis for his decision. He establishes a hierarchy of duties where service to the father (pitari shushrusha) and obedience to his word (vacana kriya) stand at the apex. He asserts there is no greater Dharma (mahattaram) than this. By grounding his action in this universal principle, Rama defends his choice to abandon the citizens and the kingdom. To him, the legitimacy of his existence and any future kingship relies on the fulfillment of this primary duty to the parent. It is an affirmation of the sanctity of the paternal bond in Vedic culture.
हिंदी टीका
राम यहाँ अपने निर्णय का धार्मिक आधार (Moral justification) देते हैं। वे बताते हैं कि क्यों वे राज-धर्म या प्रजा-हित के ऊपर पितृ-आज्ञा को रख रहे हैं। राम के अनुसार, 'पितृ-शुश्रूषा' (पिता की सेवा) और 'वचन क्रिया' (आज्ञा पालन) ही सर्वोच्च धर्म है। यह श्लोक हिंदू संस्कृति में माता-पिता के स्थान को परिभाषित करता है। राम यह संदेश दे रहे हैं कि प्रत्यक्ष देव (माता-पिता) की अवहेलना करके कोई भी अदृश्य देवता या धर्म प्रसन्न नहीं किया जा सकता। यही निष्ठा उन्हें 'मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम' बनाती है।
