भरतः पालयेद् राज्यम् शुश्रूषेच् च पितुर् यथा ।
तथा भवत्या कर्तव्यम् स हि धर्मः सनातनः ॥२-१९-२६॥
bharataḥ pālayed rājyam śuśrūṣec ca pitur yathā |
tathā bhavatyā kartavyam sa hi dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥2-19-26॥
Translation
"You must ensure that Bharata rules the kingdom and also serves the father; for that is the Eternal Dharma."

"भरत राज्य का पालन करें और पिता की सेवा भी करें, ऐसा प्रयत्न आपको करना चाहिए; क्योंकि यही सनातन धर्म है।"
English Commentary
Even in the moment of his dispossession, Rama acts as the responsible elder brother and guardian of Dharma. He instructs Kaikeyi on how Bharata should behave. It is not enough for Bharata to just rule (palayed rajyam); he must also serve the father (shushrushec ca pitur). Rama is concerned that in the wake of this tragedy, Dasharatha might be neglected. He reminds Kaikeyi that combining power with service to elders is the Sanatana Dharma (Eternal Law). Rama leaves not with bitterness, but with constructive advice to ensure the family and kingdom remain stable.

जाते-जाते राम एक बड़े भाई और रघुकुल के रक्षक के रूप में कैकेयी को उपदेश देते हैं। वे जानते हैं कि सत्ता मिलने के बाद भरत भटक सकते हैं या पिता की उपेक्षा हो सकती है (विशेषकर जब पिता भरत की माता से रुष्ट हों)। राम कैकेयी को याद दिलाते हैं कि केवल 'राज्य पालन' पर्याप्त नहीं है, 'पितृ-सेवा' (पिता की देखभाल) भी अनिवार्य है। 'स हि धर्मः सनातनः'—राम व्यक्तिगत लाभ-हानि से ऊपर उठकर कुल और राज्य के धर्म की चिंता कर रहे हैं। वे कैकेयी को एक षड्यंत्रकारी के बजाय एक 'राजमाता' की जिम्मेदारी सौंप रहे हैं।
