दुन्धुभिस्वनकल्पेन गम्भीरेणानुनादिना ।
स्वरेण महता राजा जीमूत इव नादयन् ॥ ॥२-२-२॥
dundubhisvanakalpena gambhīreṇānunādinā |
svareṇa mahatā rājā jīmūta iva nādayan ॥2-2-2॥
Translation
With a voice resembling the sound of a kettledrum—deep, resonant, and loud—the King spoke, making the surroundings echo like a thundering rain cloud.

दुन्दुभी (नगाड़े) की ध्वनि के समान गंभीर, प्रतिध्वनित होने वाले (गूंजदार) और महामेघ के समान महान स्वर से (पूरी सभा को) गुंजायमान करते हुए महाराज दशरथ ने कहा।
English Commentary
This verse focuses exclusively on the auditory quality of King Dasharatha's voice as he addresses the court. The poet uses powerful metaphors to convey the King's authority. His voice is compared to a 'Dundubhi' (a large kettledrum used in war and festivals), implying a sound that commands instant attention and signifies auspiciousness. The comparison to a 'Jimuta' (rain cloud) suggests a voice that is deep, rumbling, and benevolent—promising the 'rain' of good news to his subjects.
The adjectives 'Gambhirena' (deep/grave) and 'Anunadina' (resonant/echoing) are significant. They indicate that despite his advancing age, Dasharatha possessed the vitality and vocal power of a mighty ruler. He did not speak with the hesitation of the elderly, but with the booming clarity of a sovereign, ensuring his momentous announcement regarding Rama's coronation was delivered with the weight and dignity it deserved.

यह श्लोक महाराज दशरथ की शारीरिक और मानसिक स्थिति का परिचायक है। यद्यपि वे वृद्ध हो चले थे, किन्तु उनकी वाणी में अभी भी 'दुन्दुभी' (रणभेरी/नगाड़े) जैसा ओज और 'जीमूत' (वर्षा-मेघ) जैसी गंभीरता थी। 'गम्भीरेण' शब्द उनकी परिपक्वता और स्थिरता को दर्शाता है, जबकि 'अनुनादिना' (गूंजने वाला) शब्द यह सूचित करता है कि उनका स्वर पूरी सभा में स्पष्ट सुनाई दे रहा था।
वाल्मीकि जी द्वारा दी गई उपमाएँ निरर्थक नहीं हैं। मेघ (बादल) जिस प्रकार तपती धरती पर वर्षा करके उसे शीतलता प्रदान करता है, उसी प्रकार महाराज दशरथ का यह स्वर प्रजा के लिए सुखद समाचार (वर्षा) लाने वाला था। यह ध्वनि किसी कम्पित या कमजोर वृद्ध की नहीं, अपितु एक शक्तिशाली चक्रवर्ती सम्राट की थी, जो अपने जीवन का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण निर्णय सुनाने जा रहा था।
