Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनेकवर्षसाहस्रो वृद्धस्त्वमसि पार्थिव ।
स रामं युवराजानमभिषिञ्चस्व पार्थिवम् ॥२-२-२१॥
anekavarṣasāhasro vṛddhastvamasi pārthiva |
sa rāmaṃ yuvarājānamabhiṣiñcasva pārthivam ॥2-2-21॥
Translation
O King (Parthiva), you are many thousands of years old (advanced in age). Therefore, please consecrate Rama, who is fit to rule the earth, as the Crown Prince.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राजन् (पार्थिव)! आप कई हजार वर्षों के (अत्यंत वृद्ध) हो चुके हैं। अतः आप (पृथ्वी का पालन करने में समर्थ) श्री राम का युवराज पद पर अभिषेक कर दीजिये।
English Commentary
This verse conveys the unanimous verdict of the assembly to King Dasharatha. The citizens and ministers respectfully acknowledge the King's incredibly long reign—typical of the longevity described in the Treta Yuga ('anekavarṣasāhasro'). By noting his age, the assembly is not being dismissive; rather, they are validating his need for rest after millennia of service.
The use of the term 'Pārthiva' (Ruler of the Earth) serves a dual purpose here. It addresses Dasharatha as the current sovereign, but the adjective 'pārthivam' (in the accusative case) is also applied to Rama, describing him as one 'worthy of ruling the earth.' This indicates that the subjects do not just see Rama as a son, but as a fully capable administrator. The verse reflects the ideal transition of power in Vedic culture, where the mandate of the people aligns with the wisdom of the aging monarch to ensure the kingdom's stability.

यह श्लोक सभासदों (मंत्रियों, ब्राह्मणों और नागरिकों) द्वारा महाराज दशरथ को दिया गया सर्वसम्मत उत्तर है। यहाँ 'अनेकवर्षसाहस्रो' शब्द त्रेतायुग की उस परंपरा की ओर संकेत करता है जब मनुष्यों की आयु हजारों वर्ष होती थी। प्रजा अत्यंत आदर और स्नेह के साथ राजा को स्मरण करा रही है कि उन्होंने एक बहुत लंबी अवधि तक राज्य की सेवा की है, और अब उनके विश्राम का समय है।
वे राजा से 'पार्थिवम्' (पृथ्वी के स्वामी होने योग्य) राम का अभिषेक करने का आग्रह करते हैं। यहाँ राम के लिए भी 'पार्थिव' शब्द का प्रयोग यह सिद्ध करता है कि प्रजा राम में एक राजा के पूर्ण गुण देखती है। यह श्लोक भारतीय राजधर्म के उस सिद्धांत का परिचायक है, जहाँ राजा समय आने पर, अपनी शारीरिक अवस्था और प्रजा के हित को देखते हुए, सत्ता योग्य उत्तराधिकारी को सौंप देता है।
