Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
बहुश्रुतानां वृद्धानां ब्राह्मणानामुपासिता ।
तेनास्येहातुला कीर्तिर्यशस्तेजश्च वर्धते ॥ ॥२-२-३३॥
bahuśrutānāṃ vṛddhānāṃ brāhmaṇānāmupāsitā |
tenāsyehātulā kīrtiryaśastejaśca vardhate ॥2-2-33॥
Translation
He (Rama) is one who reverently serves the highly learned, the elders, and the Brahmanas. It is for this reason that his incomparable fame, glory, and brilliance are increasing in this world.

वे (श्रीराम) अनेक शास्त्रों के ज्ञाता विद्वानों (बहुश्रुत), वृद्धों और ब्राह्मणों की उपासना (सेवा) करने वाले हैं। इसी कारण इस लोक में उनकी अतुलनीय कीर्ति, यश और तेज निरंतर बढ़ता रहता है।
English Commentary
In this verse, the assembly draws attention to the root of Sri Rama’s greatness: his humility and reverence for wisdom. Addressing King Dasharatha, the citizens highlight that Rama, despite his royal status and unmatched valor, is a dedicated servant (Upasita) of the elders and those deeply learned in scriptures (Bahushrutas). He does not rely solely on his own intellect but actively seeks the guidance of the wise.
The commentary underscores the spiritual law at play here: true glory (Yashas) and brilliance (Tejas) are the fruits of serving the wise. The people argue that Rama's fame is not merely a result of his conquests, but a direct consequence of his respectful conduct. This assures the King that Rama is grounded in tradition and discipline. By valuing the counsel of the elders and the learned, Rama demonstrates that he possesses the temperament of a Dharma-abiding ruler who values wisdom over ego.

इस श्लोक के माध्यम से राजसभा में उपस्थित जनसमूह महाराज दशरथ के समक्ष श्रीराम की 'विनम्रता' और 'संस्कारों' का वर्णन कर रहा है। पिछले श्लोकों में श्रीराम के शौर्य और बुद्धि की प्रशंसा करने के बाद, अब वे उनके चरित्र की नींव की चर्चा कर रहे हैं। श्रीराम युवा और शक्तिशाली होते हुए भी अहंकारी नहीं हैं; वे 'बहुश्रुत' (अनेक शास्त्रों के ज्ञानी) और 'वृद्ध' जनों के सेवक हैं।
शास्त्रों का मत है कि बड़ों की सेवा से यश और तेज की वृद्धि होती है। यहाँ प्रजाजन यही पुष्टि कर रहे हैं कि श्रीराम का जो 'अतुलनीय यश' और 'तेज' आज संसार में दिखाई दे रहा है, उसका मूल कारण उनका बड़ों के प्रति सेवा-भाव है। एक राजा के लिए यह गुण अत्यंत आवश्यक है, क्योंकि जो ज्ञान और अनुभव का सम्मान करता है, वही धर्मानुसार न्यायपूर्ण शासन कर सकता है। यह श्लोक सिद्ध करता है कि श्रीराम सत्ता पाकर निरंकुश नहीं होंगे, अपितु विद्वानों के परामर्श से चलेंगे।
