गान्धर्वे च भुवि श्रेष्ठो बभूव भरताग्रजः ।
कल्याणाभिजनः साधुरदीनात्मा महामतिः ॥२-२-३५॥
gāndharve ca bhuvi śreṣṭho babhūva bharatāgrajaḥ |
kalyāṇābhijanaḥ sādhuradīnātmā mahāmatiḥ ॥2-2-35॥
Translation
The elder brother of Bharata (Rama) is the best on earth in the Gandharva art (music). He is of noble lineage, virtuous, magnanimous (of non-depressed spirit), and possessed of great intellect.

भरत के अग्रज (श्रीराम) गान्धर्व विद्या (संगीत) में इस पृथ्वी पर सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं। वे उत्तम कुल में उत्पन्न, साधु स्वभाव के, दीनता से रहित (उदार एवं मनस्वी) और महाबुद्धिमान हैं।
English Commentary
In this verse, the assembly illuminates a refined facet of Sri Rama's persona, proving he is truly a 'complete man'. Having praised his martial and scriptural command, the subjects now laud his aesthetic brilliance, declaring him the best on earth in Gandharva (the science of music and fine arts). This suggests that Rama possesses a sensitive, cultured soul capable of appreciating beauty, balancing his warrior nature.
The epithet Adīnātmā is psychologically profound. It implies that Rama possesses a magnanimous spirit that is never 'Deena' (wretched, depressed, or cowering). Regardless of the challenges, his spirit remains high and dignified—a trait essential for a King who must remain a pillar of strength for his people. By calling him Bharatāgraja (Bharata's elder brother), the subjects subtly remind the King of Rama’s leadership among his brothers, reinforcing that his noble lineage (Kalyāṇābhijana) is matched by his noble character and unshakeable mental fortitude.

यह श्लोक श्रीराम के बहुआयामी व्यक्तित्व के एक अत्यंत ही सुकुमार पक्ष को उजागर करता है। राजसभा के सदस्य महाराज दशरथ को बताते हैं कि शास्त्रों और शस्त्रों में निपुण होने के साथ-साथ, श्रीराम 'गान्धर्व विद्या' अर्थात संगीत और कला में भी पृथ्वी पर सर्वश्रेष्ठ हैं। एक कठोर योद्धा के भीतर ऐसे कलात्मक गुणों का होना उनके व्यक्तित्व की पूर्णता और संवेदनशीलता को दर्शाता है।
