तमेवंगुणसम्पन्नं रामं सत्यपराक्रमम् ।
लोकपालोपमं नाथमकामयत मेदिनी ॥२-२-४८॥
tamevaṃguṇasampannaṃ rāmaṃ satyaparākramam |
lokapālopamaṃ nāthamakāmayata medinī ॥2-2-48॥
Translation
The Earth herself desired him—Rama—who is endowed with such virtues, whose prowess is truth, and who is comparable to the Guardians of the World (Lokapalas), as her Lord.

ऐसे (पूर्वोक्त) गुणों से सम्पन्न, सत्यपराक्रमी और लोकपालों (दिक्पालों) के समान (प्रभावशाली), उस राम को पृथ्वी ने अपने स्वामी (नाथ) के रूप में चाहा।
English Commentary
This verse appears in the second Sarga of the Ayodhya Kanda. King Dasharatha is concluding his address to the assembly regarding the proposal to crown Rama as the Prince Regent. After listing Rama's numerous virtues, Dasharatha elevates the significance of the coronation by stating that the Earth herself (Medini) desires Rama as her Natha (Lord and Protector). This personification implies that Rama's leadership is a natural necessity, reflecting the collective will of the land and its people. Rama is described as Satyaparakramam, meaning his valor is rooted in Truth and is therefore unfailing. Furthermore, by comparing him to the Lokapalas (the divine guardians of the cardinal directions like Indra and Varuna), Dasharatha asserts that Rama possesses the divine capacity required to sustain the world. The King argues that installing Rama is not merely a father's preference, but the fulfillment of the Earth's destiny to be ruled by a guardian of such god-like stature and moral integrity.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के अयोध्याकाण्ड (सर्ग २) से लिया गया है। यहाँ महाराज दशरथ राजसभा में अपने सम्बोधन का समापन करते हुए श्रीराम के राज्याभिषेक के औचित्य को सिद्ध कर रहे हैं। अभी तक उन्होंने श्रीराम के बुद्धि, बल और सौम्य स्वभाव का वर्णन किया। अब वे कहते हैं कि श्रीराम का राजा बनना केवल मेरी इच्छा नहीं है, अपितु स्वयं 'मेदिनी' (पृथ्वी) की अभिलाषा है। यहाँ पृथ्वी के चाहने का अर्थ है कि समस्त प्रजा और राष्ट्र श्रीराम के संरक्षण के लिए लालायित हैं। श्रीराम को 'सत्यपराक्रम' कहा गया है, जिसका अर्थ है कि उनका बल सत्य पर आधारित है और उनका पराक्रम कभी निष्फल नहीं होता। उन्हें 'लोकपालोपम' (इन्द्र, वरुण आदि लोकपालों के समान) बताकर दशरथ जी यह स्थापित करते हैं कि श्रीराम में दैवीय रक्षण क्षमता है। भाव यह है कि जिस प्रकार पृथ्वी को धारण करने के लिए एक समर्थ शेषनाग या दिग्गज की आवश्यकता होती है, उसी प्रकार इस राज्य का भार उठाने के लिए पृथ्वी ने स्वयं श्रीराम को चुना है।
