Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तेषामायाचितं देव त्वत्प्रसादात्समृद्ध्यताम् ।
राममिन्दीवरश्यामं सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणम् ॥२-२-५३॥
teṣāmāyācitaṃ deva tvatprasādātsamṛddhyatām |
rāmamindīvaraśyāmaṃ sarvaśatrunibarhaṇam ॥2-2-53॥
Translation
O King (Deva)! through your grace, let their prayer be fulfilled. (They desire) Rama, who is dark like a blue lotus and the destroyer of all enemies.

हे राजन (देव)! उन (नागरिकों) की यह प्रार्थना आपकी कृपा से सफल हो। वे नीलकमल के समान श्यामवर्ण वाले और समस्त शत्रुओं का नाश करने वाले श्रीराम (का राज्याभिषेक देखना चाहते हैं)।
English Commentary
This verse appears in the second Sarga of the Ayodhya Kanda. After detailing the universal desire of the citizens—from the elderly women to the rural folk—for Rama's welfare, the ministers and assembly members directly petition King Dasharatha. Addressing him as 'Deva' (Lord/King), they acknowledge that while the popular will is clear, its fulfillment rests solely on the King's grace (tvat-prasadat). They ask him to validate the people's prayer. The verse poetically captures the duality of Rama's ideal kingship using two adjectives: Indivara-shyamam (dark like the blue lotus) and Sarva-shatru-nibarhanam (destroyer of all enemies). The former highlights his aesthetic appeal and gentle nature that wins hearts, while the latter emphasizes his martial prowess that ensures security. The assembly implies that Rama is the perfect blend of beauty and power, and they implore Dasharatha to crown this warrior-prince.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के अयोध्याकाण्ड (सर्ग २) से लिया गया है। यहाँ सभासद और मन्त्रीगण महाराज दशरथ से अंतिम और निर्णायक निवेदन कर रहे हैं। पिछले श्लोकों में उन्होंने बताया कि कैसे पूरी अयोध्या श्रीराम के लिए प्रार्थना कर रही है। अब वे महाराज को 'देव' सम्बोधित करते हुए कहते हैं कि जनता की यह पुकार केवल आपकी कृपा (प्रसाद) से ही सिद्ध हो सकती है। इस श्लोक में श्रीराम के व्यक्तित्व के दो पूरक पहलुओं का सुंदर चित्रण है। उन्हें 'इन्दीवरश्यामं' (नीलकमल के समान सुंदर श्याम वर्ण वाला) कहा गया है, जो उनकी सौम्यता और प्रजा-रंजन की शक्ति को दर्शाता है। साथ ही, उन्हें 'सर्वशत्रुनिबर्हणम्' (शत्रुओं का संहारक) कहा गया है, जो उनकी वीर रस और रक्षण क्षमता का प्रतीक है। भाव यह है कि प्रजा को ऐसा राजा चाहिए जो सौन्दर्य में मोहित करने वाला हो और पराक्रम में अजेय हो।
