इदं शरीरं कृत्स्नस्य लोकस्य चरता हितम् ।
पाण्डुरस्यातपत्रस्य च्छायायां जरितं मया ॥ ॥२-२-७॥
idaṃ śarīraṃ kṛtsnasya lokasya caratā hitam |
pāṇḍurasyātapatrasya cchāyāyāṃ jaritaṃ mayā ॥2-2-7॥
Translation
While striving for the welfare of the entire world under the shade of the white royal umbrella, I have caused this body to grow old and worn out.

सम्पूर्ण जगत (प्रजा) का हित-साधन करते हुए और (राजोचित) श्वेत छत्र की छाया में रहते हुए, मैंने अपने इस शरीर को वृद्ध कर लिया है (यह शरीर अब जीर्ण हो गया है)।
English Commentary
This verse from the Ayodhya Kanda (Canto 2) of Valmiki Ramayana captures a poignant moment of introspection by King Dasharatha. Addressing his royal assembly, the King uses the metaphor of the 'white umbrella' (Pandura Atapatra), the ancient symbol of royal sovereignty and protection. While the umbrella signifies power, Dasharatha highlights the cost of wielding it: the relentless service to the 'entire world' (his subjects) has drained his vitality. By stating that his body has 'grown old' under this shade, he is communicating that his reign was a long sacrifice, not a tenure of leisure. He presents his aging not as a failure, but as the natural result of a life spent in duty. This admission is crucial as it lays the logical and moral groundwork for his proposal to abdicate the throne in favor of his son, Sri Rama, ensuring that the kingdom remains in capable, youthful hands while he retires.

यह श्लोक वाल्मीकि रामायण के अयोध्याकाण्ड (सर्ग २) से है। महाराज दशरथ अपनी राजसभा में उपस्थित गुरु वशिष्ठ, मंत्रियों और प्रमुख नागरिकों को संबोधित करते हुए अपने जीवन की वास्तविकता को स्वीकार कर रहे हैं। 'श्वेत छत्र' राजसत्ता और धर्म का प्रतीक है, जिसकी छाया में राजा का कर्तव्य प्रजा को ताप (कष्ट) से बचाना है। महाराज कहते हैं कि प्रजा के कल्याण के लिए निरंतर परिश्रम करते हुए उन्होंने अपना यौवन और जीवन खपा दिया है। यह कथन उनकी आत्म-स्वीकृति है कि अब उनका शरीर शिथिल हो रहा है। वे यह स्पष्ट करना चाहते हैं कि उनका विश्राम लेने का निर्णय स्वार्थ नहीं, बल्कि शारीरिक आवश्यकता और राज्य के भविष्य की चिंता है। एक आदर्श राजा के रूप में, वे यह मानते हैं कि जब शरीर जर्जर हो जाए, तो राज्य का भार एक समर्थ उत्तराधिकारी (श्री राम) को सौंप देना ही धर्म है। यह श्लोक राजा के त्याग और कर्तव्यनिष्ठा का परिचायक है।
