Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दृष्ट्वैव तु तदा रामं ते सर्वे सहसोत्थिताः ।
जयेन जयतां श्रेष्ठं वर्धयन्ति स्म राघवम् ॥ ॥२-२०-१०॥
Dṛṣṭvaiva tu tadā rāmaṃ te sarve sahasotthitāḥ । Jayena jayatāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ vardhayanti sma rāghavam ॥ ॥2-20-10॥
Translation
Seeing Rama, they all stood up immediately and cheered that best of conquerors, Raghava, with cries of "Victory!"
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम को देखते ही वे सभी सहसा उठ खड़े हुए और विजय प्राप्त करने वालों में श्रेष्ठ राघव का 'जय' शब्दों से अभिनंदन (जयकार) करने लगे।
English Commentary
This verse presents a tragic irony. The people at Kausalya’s gate, unaware of the banishment, greet Rama with the customary enthusiasm reserved for the Crown Prince. They chant "Victory" (Jaya) to the one who has just lost his kingdom. While they mean political victory, the reader knows Rama has achieved a moral victory over greed and anger. However, for Rama, hearing these cheers while walking to tell his mother he is exiled adds a layer of poignant pain to his journey. He must receive their adulation knowing it is about to turn into grief.

यह श्लोक एक करुण विरोधाभास (Irony) प्रस्तुत करता है। कौसल्या के द्वार पर उपस्थित लोग अभी भी इस भ्रम में हैं कि राम राज्याभिषेक के लिए या शुभ समाचार लेकर आ रहे हैं। वे 'जयेन' (जय हो!) के उद्घोष के साथ उनका स्वागत करते हैं। राम, जो अभी-अभी अपना सर्वस्व हारकर (त्यागकर) आ रहे हैं, उन्हें 'विजयी' कहा जा रहा है। आध्यात्मिक दृष्टि से यह सत्य है—राम ने लोभ और मोह पर विजय प्राप्त की है—लेकिन सांसारिक दृष्टि से यह जयकार राम के हृदय को और अधिक पीड़ा पहुंचाने वाली रही होगी।
