सोऽपश्यत् पुरुषं तत्र वृद्धं परमपूजितम् ।
उपविष्टं गृहद्वारि तिष्ठतश्चापरान् बहून् ॥ ॥२-२०-९॥
So'paśyat puruṣaṃ tatra vṛddhaṃ paramapūjitam । Upaviṣṭaṃ gṛhadvāri tiṣṭhataścāparān bahūn ॥ ॥2-20-9॥
Translation
There, he saw an old and highly honored man seated at the door of the house, and many others standing nearby.

वहां (कौसल्या के महल के पास) उन्होंने द्वार पर बैठे हुए एक परम पूजनीय वृद्ध पुरुष को देखा, और वहां खड़े हुए अन्य बहुत से लोगों को भी देखा।
English Commentary
As Rama approaches Kausalya's quarters, he notices the people waiting there. The "highly honored old man" is likely a senior chamberlain or advisor (possibly Sumantra or a chief guard of the queen's quarters). Rama's observation of these details, despite his immense mental anguish, shows his presence of mind. The scene implies that Kausalya's palace is still bustling with people waiting for the coronation festivities, unaware or just learning of the sudden turn of events. It sets the stage for the heartbreaking announcement Rama must make.
