Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रणम्य रामस्तान् वृद्धान् तृतीयायां ददर्श सः ।
स्त्रियो वृद्धाश्च बालाश्च द्वाररक्षणतत्पराः ॥ ॥२-२०-१२॥
Praṇamya rāmastān vṛddhāṃstṛtīyāyāṃ dadarśa saḥ । Striyo vṛddhāśca bālāśca dvārarakṣaṇatatparāḥ ॥ ॥2-20-12॥
Translation
Bowing to those elders, Rama entered the third courtyard, where he saw old and young women distinctively engaged in guarding the door.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम उन वृद्धों (ब्राह्मणों) को प्रणाम करके (तीसरी कक्ष्या में गए) और वहां उन्होंने द्वार की रक्षा में तत्पर बूढ़ी और जवान स्त्रियों को देखा।
English Commentary
Even in this moment of crisis, Rama upholds Dharma and etiquette by bowing to the Brahmins before proceeding. Moving to the third enclosure, the security detail changes to women (striyo), both young and old, who are guarding the inner sanctum. In ancient Indian royal tradition, the innermost quarters of the queens were often guarded by female attendants (Pratiharis). This marks the final threshold. Rama has navigated through public adulation and religious blessings, and now stands at the entrance of his mother's private world, bearing heartbreaking news.

अपनी विपत्ति के समय भी राम शिष्टाचार नहीं भूलते; उन्होंने ब्राह्मणों को प्रणाम किया। तीसरी कक्ष्या में प्रवेश करने पर दृश्य बदलता है—यहाँ महिला अंगरक्षक और सेविकाएं हैं। प्राचीन भारतीय महलों में रनिवास के भीतरी कक्षों की सुरक्षा अक्सर विश्वसनीय स्त्रियों (प्रतिहारियों) के हाथ में होती थी। 'वृद्धाश्च बालाश्च' (वृद्ध और युवा) का उल्लेख बताता है कि वहां सभी आयु की सेविकाएं थीं जो कौसल्या की सेवा और सुरक्षा में नियुक्त थीं। अब राम अपनी माता के नितांत निजी कक्ष के समीप पहुंच चुके हैं।
