Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स मातरमभिक्रान्तामुपसंगृह्य राघवः ।
परिष्वक्तश्च बाहुभ्यामुपाघ्रातश्च मूर्धनि ॥ ॥२-२०-२१॥
Sa mātaramabhikrāntāmupasaṃgṛhya rāghavaḥ । Pariṣvaktaśca bāhubhyāmupāghrātaśca mūrdhani ॥ ॥2-20-21॥
Translation
As his mother approached, Raghava held her feet (in salutation). She embraced him with her arms and smelled his head (a gesture of affection).
हिंदी अनुवाद
राघव ने अपनी ओर आती हुई माता के चरणों में प्रणाम किया। तब माता ने उन्हें दोनों बाहुओं में भर लिया (आलिंगन किया) और (स्नेहवश) उनका मस्तक सूंघा।
English Commentary
This depicts the traditional exchange of reverence and affection. Rama respectfully touches her feet (upasamgrihya). Kausalya responds with an embrace and by smelling his crown/head (upaghrata cha murdhani). In ancient Indian tradition, smelling the head of a child is the profoundest expression of parental love, superior even to kissing. This intimate moment of physical connection serves as the emotional anchor of the scene, making the impending separation agonizingly difficult for Rama.

यह भारतीय संस्कृति में वात्सल्य का उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण है। राम ने 'उपसंगृह्य' (चरण स्पर्श/वंदन) किया। कौसल्या ने उन्हें गले लगाया और 'उपाघ्रातश्च मूर्धनि' (सिर सूंघा)। प्राचीन भारत में मस्तक सूंघना माता-पिता द्वारा संतान को आशीर्वाद और स्नेह देने का सर्वोच्च तरीका माना जाता था। यह स्पर्श राम के लिए बहुत कठिन रहा होगा, क्योंकि वे जानते हैं कि यह आलिंगन जल्द ही विछोह में बदलने वाला है। यह शारीरिक समीपता भावी वियोग की पीड़ा को और बढ़ा देती है।
