Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वृद्धानां धर्मशीलानां राजर्षीणां महात्मनाम् ।
प्राप्नुहि आयुश्च कीर्तिं च धर्मं चोपहितं कुले ॥ ॥२-२०-२३॥
Vṛddhānāṃ dharmaśīlānāṃ rājarṣīṇāṃ mahātmanām । Prāpnuhi āyuśca kīrtiṃ ca dharmaṃ copahitaṃ kule ॥ ॥2-20-23॥
Translation
"May you attain the longevity, fame, and the dharma upheld in our lineage by the aged, righteous, and great royal sages."

(हे पुत्र!) तुम हमारे कुल के वृद्ध, धर्मशील और महात्मा राजर्षियों की आयु, कीर्ति और धर्म को प्राप्त करो।
English Commentary
Kausalya blesses Rama. Significantly, she invokes the standard of the Rajarshis (Royal Sages) of their dynasty—those who combined kingship with spiritual asceticism. She prays for Ayu (longevity), Kirti (fame), and Dharma. The phrase upahitam kule refers to the specific code of conduct upheld by their ancestors. Unknowingly, this blessing is prophetic and apt for his exile; it is in the forest that Rama will truly emulate the lives of the great Royal Sages and attain undying fame, far exceeding what he would have gained merely as a sitting monarch.

यह कौसल्या का आशीर्वाद है। वे राम के लिए केवल भौतिक सुख नहीं मांग रहीं, बल्कि 'राजर्षियों' (राजा जो ऋषि समान हों) जैसा जीवन मांग रही हैं। वे तीन चीजों की कामना करती हैं: आयु (long life), कीर्ति (fame), और धर्म (righteousness)। 'उपहितं कुले' का अर्थ है वह धर्म जो रघुकुल में स्थापित है। अनजाने में ही सही, कौसल्या ने राम को वनवास के लिए सही आशीर्वाद दिया है, क्योंकि वन में ही राम सच्चे अर्थों में राजर्षियों जैसा धर्म और शाश्वत कीर्ति प्राप्त करेंगे।
