Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दत्तमासनमालभ्य भोजनेन निमन्त्रितः ।
मातरम् राघवः किम्चित् प्रसार्य अन्जलिम् अब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-२०-२५॥
Dattamāsanamālabhya bhojanena nimantritaḥ । Mātaram rāghavaḥ kiñcit prasārya añjalim abravīt ॥ ॥2-20-25॥
Translation
Being invited for a meal by his mother, Raghava (Rama) merely touched the seat offered to him, and extending his folded hands in salutation, spoke to his mother.

माता द्वारा भोजन के लिए आमंत्रित किए जाने पर, राम ने दिए गए आसन को (हाथ से) स्पर्श करके, और हाथ जोड़कर अपनी माता से कहा।
English Commentary
This verse captures a subtle yet profound nuance of Rama’s character. Although invited by his mother to sit and eat, Rama does not sit on the royal seat. He merely touches it (alabhya)—a gesture of respect acknowledging the offering—but refuses the comfort, signaling that he has already mentally entered the state of an ascetic. Standing with folded hands (anjali), implies he is pleading for understanding rather than commanding attention. It highlights his dilemma: how to break a mother's heart while adhering to the protocol of his new reality as an exile.

वाल्मीकि रामायण का यह क्षण राम की मर्यादा और मानसिक स्थिति का सूक्ष्म चित्रण है। यद्यपि माता कौशल्या उन्हें प्रेम से भोजन और आसन दे रही हैं, राम उस राजसी आसन पर नहीं बैठते। वे उसे केवल स्पर्श करते हैं, जो आदर का सूचक है, परन्तु उनका बैठना अस्वीकार करना यह दर्शाता है कि उन्होंने मानसिक रूप से 'वनवास' स्वीकार कर लिया है। भोजन का निमंत्रण अस्वीकार करना उनके लिए अत्यंत कठिन है, फिर भी वे अंजलिबद्ध (हाथ जोड़कर) होकर विनम्रता से अपनी बात रखने की भूमिका बनाते हैं। यह श्लोक धर्म संकट के समय भी बड़ों के प्रति सम्मान बनाए रखने की शिक्षा देता है।
