स स्वभाव विनीतः च गौरवाच् च तदा आनतः ।
प्रस्थितो दण्डकारण्यमाप्रष्टुमुपचक्रमे ॥ ॥२-२०-२६॥
Sa svabhāva vinītaḥ ca gauravāc ca tadā ānataḥ । Prasthito daṇḍakāraṇyamāpraṣṭumupacakrame ॥ ॥2-20-26॥
Translation
He (Rama), naturally humble by disposition and bowing down out of deep respect for her, began to seek her leave to depart for the Dandaka forest.

वे (राम), जो स्वभाव से ही विनीत थे, माता के गौरव (सम्मान) के कारण झुक गए और दंडकारण्य जाने के लिए उनसे अनुमति माँगने लगे।
English Commentary
The descriptions used here, svabhava vinitah (naturally humble), define Rama. His humility represents strength, not weakness. He bows due to gaurava—the weight of his mother's status and love. Although the decision to go to Dandaka forest is irrevocable due to his father's promise, he frames his departure as a request for permission (aprashtum). This demonstrates the Vedic etiquette where duty to the father (exile) does not negate the duty to the mother (seeking her blessings before departure).

राम 'स्वभाव विनीतः' हैं—अर्थात् उनकी विनम्रता कोई दिखावा नहीं, बल्कि उनका मूल चरित्र है। माता के सामने उनका झुकना 'गौरव' (माता के भारी महत्व) के कारण है। यहाँ एक विरोधाभास है: वह वन जाने के लिए 'प्रस्थान' कर चुके हैं (मानसिक रूप से), किन्तु शिष्टाचार के नाते माता से 'आप्रष्टुम' (पूछने/आज्ञा लेने) की प्रक्रिया शुरू कर रहे हैं। यह आदर्श पुत्र का लक्षण है जो स्वतंत्र निर्णय लेने में सक्षम होते हुए भी माता-पिता की अनुमति और आशीर्वाद को सर्वोपरि मानता है।
