चतुर्दश हि वर्षाणि वत्स्यामि विजने वने ।
मधु मूल फलैः जीवन् हित्वा मुनिवद् आमिषम् ॥ ॥२-२०-२९॥
Caturdaśa hi varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vijane vane । Madhu mūla phalaiḥ jīvan hitvā munivad āmiṣam ॥ ॥2-20-29॥
Translation
"For fourteen years I shall dwell in the lonely forest, living on honey, roots, and fruits, giving up meat like a sage (Muni)."

"मैं चौदह वर्षों तक निर्जन वन में रहूँगा। मुनियों की भाँति आमिष (मांस/भोग) का त्याग करके, शहद, कंद और फलों पर जीवन निर्वाह करूँगा।"
English Commentary
Rama details the terms of his exile. It is not just a relocation but a transformation into a Muni (sage). He explicitly mentions abstaining from amisham (meat/flesh), which was part of the royal Kshatriya diet, and subsisting instead on roots, fruits, and honey. This indicates a shift to a Sattvic lifestyle necessary for spiritual discipline in the forest. The mention of "fourteen years" emphasizes the duration of this penance, underlining the severity of the sentence imposed by Kaikeyi.
