षट् चाष्टौ च वर्षाणि वत्स्यामि विजने वने ।
आसेवमानो वन्यानि फलमूलैश्च वर्तयन् ॥ ॥२-२०-३१॥
Ṣaṭ cāṣṭau ca varṣāṇi vatsyāmi vijane vane । Āsevamāno vanyāni phalamūlaiśca vartayan ॥ ॥2-20-31॥
Translation
"For six and eight (fourteen) years, I shall live in the lonely forest, partaking of wild produce and subsisting on roots and fruits."

"मैं छह और आठ (कुल चौदह) वर्षों तक निर्जन वन में निवास करूँगा और वन में उगने वाले कंद-मूल-फलों का सेवन करते हुए जीवन बिताऊँगा।"
English Commentary
Rama reiterates the duration and conditions of his exile to ensure the reality sinks in. The phrasing "six and eight years" is a stylistic variation for fourteen. By repeating that he will subsist on wild produce (vanyani) and roots, he is dismantling Kausalya's hope or illusion that he might carry royal comforts with him. He is emphasizing self-reliance and the stripping away of all royal privileges.

राम पुनः अवधि और जीवनशैली पर जोर देते हैं। 'षट् चाष्टौ' (6+8) कहने का तरीका काव्यत्मक है। बार-बार 'फल-मूल' और 'वन' का उल्लेख यह सुनिश्चित करने के लिए है कि कौशल्या स्थिति की वास्तविकता को समझ लें कि राम अब महलों का भोजन नहीं करेंगे। वह माता को मानसिक रूप से तैयार कर रहे हैं कि उनका पुत्र अब एक कठोर जीवन शैली अपनाने जा रहा है। यह पुनरावृत्ति उनके संकल्प की दृढ़ता को भी दिखाती है।
