सा निकृत्तैव सालस्य यष्टिः परशुना वने ।
पपात सहसा देवी देवतेव दिवश्च्युता ॥ ॥२-२०-३२॥
Sā nikṛttaiva sālasya yaṣṭiḥ paraśunā vane । Papāta sahasā devī devateva divaścyutā ॥ ॥2-20-32॥
Translation
Upon hearing this, the Queen fell suddenly to the ground, like the branch of a Sal tree severred by an axe in the forest, or like a goddess fallen from heaven.
हिंदी अनुवाद
(यह सुनकर) वह देवी (कौशल्या) वन में कुल्हाड़ी से कटी हुई साल वृक्ष की शाखा (लता/शाखा) की भाँति, अथवा स्वर्ग से गिरी हुई देवकन्या की भाँति अचानक पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ीं।
English Commentary
Valmiki uses powerful similes here. Kausalya collapses under the shock. She is compared to a Sal tree branch severed by an axe—implying she was strong and noble, but the blow (the news) was violent and unnatural. The second simile, "a goddess fallen from heaven," highlights her grace and the tragedy of her fall from the height of happiness (expecting a coronation) to the depth of despair. The shock is physical and immediate.

यहाँ वाल्मीकि ने कौशल्या के दुख के वेग को दर्शाने के लिए अद्भुत उपमाओं का प्रयोग किया है। 'निकृत्तैव सालस्य यष्टिः'—जैसे मजबूत साल वृक्ष की शाखा कुल्हाड़ी के वार से गिरती है, वैसे ही राम के वचनों ने उन पर कुठाराघात किया। 'देवतेव दिवश्च्युता'—उनका गिरना किसी साधारण स्त्री का गिरना नहीं था, बल्कि पुण्य क्षीण होने पर स्वर्ग से गिरती देवी जैसा था। यह उनके पूर्व वैभव और वर्तमान स्थिति के पतन का प्रतीक है। पुत्र वियोग का आघात उनके लिए शारीरिक रूप से असहनीय हो गया।
