Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
न द्Rष्ट पूर्वम् कल्याणम् सुखम् वा पति पौरुषे ।
अपि पुत्रे विपश्येयम् इति राम आस्थितम् मया ॥ ॥२-२०-३८॥
Na dṛṣṭa pūrvam kalyāṇam sukham vā pati pauruṣe । Api putre vipaśyeyam iti rāma āsthitam mayā ॥ ॥2-20-38॥
Translation
"O Rama, I have not experienced happiness or welfare earlier through my husband's potency (or power). I sustained myself only with the hope that I would eventually find happiness through my son."

"हे राम! मैंने पहले (तुम्हारे पिता के) पौरुष या सौभाग्य से कभी सुख या कल्याण नहीं देखा। मैंने यह सोचकर धैर्य धारण किया था कि अंततः अपने पुत्र के राजा बनने पर मैं सुख देखूँगी।"
English Commentary
This verse reveals the painful internal dynamics of Dasharatha’s household. Kausalya admits that despite being the Chief Queen, she felt neglected by her husband (pati paurushe), hinting at Dasharatha’s infatuation with Kaikeyi. She confesses that she endured years of neglect solely on the hope (asthitam) that her son's ascension would vindicate her and bring the happiness she missed in her marriage. With Rama’s exile, her only strategy for happiness collapses.

यह श्लोक दशरथ के अंतःपुर की कड़वी सच्चाई को उजागर करता है। पटरानी होने के बावजूद, कौशल्या ने स्वीकार किया कि उन्हें पति से वह सुख और सम्मान नहीं मिला जिसकी वे अधिकारिणी थीं, क्योंकि दशरथ का झुकाव कैकेयी की ओर अधिक था। उन्होंने अपने जीवन के सारे खालीपन को इस उम्मीद से भर रखा था कि एक दिन राम राजा बनेंगे और उनके दिन बदलेंगे। अब वह उम्मीद टूटने पर उनका पुराना घाव भी हरा हो गया है।
