सा बहूनि अमनोजज्ञानि वाक्यानि ह्Rदयच्चिदाम् ।
अहम् श्रोष्ये सपत्नीनाम् अवराणाम् वरा सती ॥ ॥२-२०-३९॥
Sā bahūni amanojñāni vākyāni hṛdayacchidām । Aham śroṣye sapatnīnām avarāṇām varā satī ॥ ॥2-20-39॥
Translation
"I, despite being the eldest and most virtuous wife, shall now have to listen to many unpleasant and heart-piercing words from my inferior co-wives."

"सर्वश्रेष्ठ (वरा) और सती होते हुए भी, अब मुझे अपनी छोटी सौतों (कैकेयी आदि) के बहुत से अप्रिय और हृदय को छलनी करने वाले वचन सुनने पड़ेंगे।"
English Commentary
Kausalya laments the inversion of hierarchy. Being Vara Sati (the best and senior-most wife), she should command respect. Instead, due to the shift in power dynamics, she anticipates humiliation at the hands of avaranam (inferior/junior co-wives). The phrase hrdayacchidam (heart-piercing) suggests that verbal abuse in the harem was a genuine threat she feared. Without Rama’s power to back her, her seniority holds no shield against insults.

कौशल्या 'वरा सती' (श्रेष्ठ और पतिव्रता) हैं, फिर भी स्थिति ऐसी बन गई है कि उन्हें 'अवराणाम्' (छोटी या निम्न पद वाली) रानियों के ताने सुनने पड़ेंगे। यहाँ 'हृदयच्छिदाम्' (हृदय को छेदने वाले) शब्द का प्रयोग बताता है कि रनिवास में वाणी का युद्ध कितना क्रूर हो सकता है। राम के युवराज पद पर न होने से कौशल्या का सुरक्षा कवच हट गया है, और उन्हें अपनी प्रतिष्ठा धूमिल होती दिख रही है।
