Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तदक्षयम् महाद्दुःखम् नोत्सहे सहितुम् चिरम् ।
विप्रकारम् सपत्नीनामेवम् जीर्णापि राघव ॥ ॥२-२०-४६॥
Tadakṣayam mahādduḥkham notsahe sahitum ciram । Viprakāram sapatnīnāmevam jīrṇāpi rāghava ॥ ॥2-20-46॥
Translation
"O Raghava! I am now old and worn out. I cannot endure this endless great sorrow and the insults of my co-wives any longer."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे राघव! मैं अब बूढ़ी (जीर्णा) हो चुकी हूँ। मैं सौतों के इस अपमान (विप्रकार) और इस अक्षय (कभी न मिटने वाले) महादुःख को अब और अधिक समय तक सहने का साहस नहीं कर सकती।"
English Commentary
Kausalya pleads incapacity due to age. She describes herself as jirna (decayed/aged). While she might have endured insults earlier, she now lacks the energy (na utsahe) to bear the viprakaram (insults/offenses) of her co-wives alongside this new tragedy. She characterizes her grief as akshayam (undecaying/endless), indicating that she sees no light at the end of the tunnel anymore.

कौशल्या अपनी वृद्धावस्था ('जीर्णा') का हवाला देती हैं। जवानी में अपमान सहना अलग बात है, परन्तु बुढ़ापे में जब शरीर और मन दोनों कमजोर हो जाते हैं, तब 'अक्षय दुःख' (जिसका क्षय न हो) सहना असंभव लगता है। 'नोत्सहे' (उत्साह नहीं है/हिम्मत नहीं है) शब्द बताता है कि उनकी जीने की इच्छाशक्ति (will to live) समाप्त हो रही है। वह मानसिक रूप से टूट चुकी हैं।
