Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अपश्यन्ती तव मुखम् परिपूर्णशशिप्रभम् ।
कृपणा वर्तयिष्यामि कथम् कृपणजीविकाम् ॥ ॥२-२०-४७॥
Apaśyantī tava mukham paripūrṇaśaśiprabham । Kṛpaṇā vartayiṣyāmi katham kṛpaṇajīvikām ॥ ॥2-20-47॥
Translation
"Not seeing your face, which shines like the full moon, how shall I, wretched as I am, lead this miserable life?"

"तुम्हारे पूर्ण चंद्रमा के समान कांति वाले (सुंदर) मुख को न देखते हुए, मैं अभागिन (कृपणा) अपना दीन-हीन जीवन कैसे बिताऊँगी?"
English Commentary
The metaphor of Rama's face as the paripurna shashi (full moon) highlights the soothing and illuminating effect he has on Kausalya's dark life. The deprivation is visual and visceral. She uses the word kripana (wretched/pitiable) twice—once for herself and once for her livelihood (jivikam). It emphasizes that without the visual sustenance of Rama's presence, her existence is not just sad, but spiritually and emotionally impoverished.

राम के मुख की तुलना 'परिपूर्ण शशि' (पूर्णिमा के चाँद) से की गई है, जो शीतलता और आनंद का स्रोत है। कौशल्या के लिए राम का मुख देखना ही जीवन का एकमात्र सुख था। 'कृपणा' (दीन/कंजूस/अभागिन) शब्द का दो बार प्रयोग उनकी दयनीय स्थिति पर जोर देता है। वह पूछती हैं 'कथम्' (कैसे)—यह एक व्यावहारिक प्रश्न है कि जिस जीवन का आधार ही छिन गया हो, उसे ढोया कैसे जाए?
