Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स्थिरम् तु हृदयम् मन्ये मम इदम् यन् न दीर्यते ।
प्रावृषि इव महा नद्याः स्पृष्टम् कूलम् नव अम्भसा ॥ ॥२-२०-४९॥
Sthiram tu hṛdayam manye mama idam yan na dīryate । Prāvṛṣi iva mahā nadyāḥ spṛṣṭam kūlam nava ambhasā ॥ ॥2-20-49॥
Translation
"I consider my heart to be indeed very hard/stable, for it does not break, unlike the bank of a great river which collapses when touched by the new waters (floods) of the rainy season."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं मानती हूँ कि मेरा यह हृदय निश्चय ही बहुत कठोर (स्थिर) है, जो फट नहीं रहा है; जैसे वर्षा ऋतु में नई बाढ़ के जल के स्पर्श से महानदी का किनारा फटकर गिर जाता है (वैसा मेरे साथ नहीं हो रहा)।"
English Commentary
Kausalya expresses disbelief at her own survival. She employs a simile of nature: usually, the banks of a river (kulam) crumble easily when struck by the rushing "new waters" (nava ambhasa) of the monsoon. The news of Rama’s exile is that flood. The fact that her heart remains intact suggests to her that it must be unnaturally hard (sthiram), denying her the release of death.

कौशल्या को आश्चर्य है कि इतना भारी वज्रपात होने पर भी उनके प्राण क्यों नहीं निकल रहे। वह अपने हृदय की तुलना नदी के किनारे से करती हैं। वर्षा ऋतु में जब 'नव अम्भसा' (नया पानी/बाढ़) आता है, तो मिट्टी के किनारे ढह जाते हैं। राम का वियोग बाढ़ जैसा ही प्रलयकारी है, फिर भी उनका हृदय नहीं फट रहा। वह अपनी सहनशक्ति को अपनी दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण कठोरता मान रही हैं।
