स हि चान्तःपुरे घोरमार्तशब्दं महीपतिः ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तः श्रुत्वा व्यालीयतासने ॥ ॥२-२०-७॥
Sa hi cāntaḥpure ghoramārtaśabdaṃ mahīpatiḥ । Putraśokābhisantaptaḥ śrutvā vyālīyatāsane ॥ ॥2-20-7॥
Translation
Hearing that terrifying cry of distress in the inner palace, the Lord of the Earth (Dasharatha), scorched by grief for his son, slumped down into his seat.

अंतःपुर में उस घोर आर्तनाद को सुनकर, पुत्र-शोक से संतप्त हुए महाराज दशरथ अपने आसन पर ही (लज्जा और दुःख से) सिकुड़ कर छिप से गए।
English Commentary
This verse focuses on Dasharatha's reaction. He is titled Mahipati (Lord of the Earth), yet he is utterly powerless in his own home. Hearing the ghoram (terrifying) wailing of the queens, he does not go to console them; instead, he collapses or shrinks (vyaliyata) into his throne. This physical reaction signifies immense guilt and an inability to face the consequences of his adherence to truth (Satya). He is "scorched" (abhisantapta) by grief. The King is effectively paralyzed by the emotional weight of the tragedy he has sanctioned.

यह श्लोक दशरथ की दयनीय स्थिति का चित्रण करता है। 'महीपतिः' (पृथ्वी के स्वामी) शब्द का प्रयोग यहां व्यंग्यात्मक विरोधाभास उत्पन्न करता है—जो पूरी पृथ्वी के स्वामी हैं, वे अपने ही घर के कोलाहल का सामना करने में असमर्थ हैं। 'व्यालीयतासने' का अर्थ है कि वे आसन में धंस गए या छिपने का प्रयास करने लगे। यह लज्जा, ग्लानि और असहायता का मिश्रण है। रानियों का विलाप उनके लिए बाणों के समान था, जो उन्हें यह याद दिला रहा था कि उन्होंने अपने प्रिय पुत्र और अपने परिवार की खुशियों का विनाश कर दिया है।
