तथा तु विलपन्तीम् ताम् कौसल्याम् राम मातरम् ।
उवाच लक्ष्मणो दीनः तत् काल सदृशम् वचः ॥ ॥२-२१-१॥
Tathā tu vilapantīm tām kausalyām rāma mātaram । Uvāca lakṣmaṇo dīnaḥ tat kāla sadṛśam vacaḥ ॥ ॥2-21-1॥
Translation
To Kausalya, the mother of Rama, who was thus lamenting, the distressed Lakshmana spoke words suitable to that occasion.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इस प्रकार विलाप करती हुई राम की माता कौशल्या से, दुखी लक्ष्मण ने उस समय (परिस्थिति) के अनुकूल वचन कहे।
English Commentary
This opens Canto 21. While Kausalya weeps, Lakshmana steps in. He is described as dina (distressed) by seeing his mother-figure suffer, but his reaction is verbal and action-oriented. He speaks words tat kala sadrisham (fitting for the time)—implying that mere tears are insufficient for the moment; stern words and action are required. This sets the stage for Lakshmana’s fiery outburst against Dasharatha.

यहाँ से 21वां सर्ग (Canto) आरम्भ होता है। दृश्य में लक्ष्मण का प्रवेश (संवाद के रूप में) होता है। लक्ष्मण भी 'दीन' (दुखी) हैं, लेकिन वह चुप नहीं रहते। वह 'तत् काल सदृशम्' (समय के अनुकूल) बात कहते हैं। इसका अर्थ है कि वह केवल सांत्वना नहीं देंगे, बल्कि क्रोध और पौरुष की बात करेंगे जो उस अन्यायपूर्ण समय की मांग थी। लक्ष्मण का चरित्र यहाँ एक यथार्थवादी और क्रांतिकारी भाई के रूप में उभरता है।
