बलमेष किमाश्रित्य हेतुम् वा पुरुषर्षभ ।
दातुमिच्छति कैकेय्य राज्यम् स्थितमिदम् तव ॥ ॥२-२१-१४॥
Balameṣa kimāśritya hetum vā puruṣarṣabha |
Dātumicchati kaikeyyai rājyam sthitamidam tava ॥2-21-14॥
Translation
O best among men, relying on what power or what reason does he wish to give this kingdom, which is rightfully yours, to Kaikeyi?

हे पुरुषश्रेष्ठ! आखिर किस बल या किस कारण (हेतु) का आश्रय लेकर राजा दशरथ, आपके इस निश्चित राज्य को कैकेयी को देना चाहते हैं?
English Commentary
Lakshmana questions the source of Dasaratha's authority to alter the succession. By phrasing it as "relying on what power," he implies the King is actually powerless against the established laws of primogeniture and public will. The phrase sthitam idam tava (this is established as yours) underscores that the kingdom belongs to Rama by right, not by the King's whim. Lakshmana is dismantling the King's decree by exposing it as arbitrary and lacking any foundation in legal or moral reason.

लक्ष्मण यहाँ राजा के निर्णय के आधार को चुनौती दे रहे हैं। 'स्थितमिदम् तव' का अर्थ है कि राज्य पर राम का अधिकार पहले से ही स्थापित और निश्चित है (ज्येष्ठ पुत्र होने के नाते और प्रजा की इच्छा से)। लक्ष्मण पूछते हैं कि दशरथ के पास ऐसा कौन सा 'बल' (शक्ति) या 'हेतु' (तर्क) है जिससे वे इस प्राकृतिक नियम को बदल सकें? यह प्रश्न राजा की वैधता पर प्रहार करता है। लक्ष्मण का मानना है कि राजा का यह कार्य निराधार है और इसमें कोई नैतिक या वैधानिक शक्ति नहीं है, केवल हठ है।
