दीप्तम् अग्निम् अरण्यम् वा यदि रामः प्रवेक्ष्यते ।
प्रविष्टम् तत्र माम् देवि त्वम् पूर्वम् अवधारय ॥ ॥२-२१-१७॥
Dīptam agnim araṇyam vā yadi rāmaḥ pravekṣyate |
Praviṣṭam tatra mām devi tvam pūrvam avadhāraya ॥2-21-17॥
Translation
If Rama enters blazing fire or the forest, O Devi, know for certain that I have entered there before him.
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि राम जलती हुई आग में या वन में प्रवेश करेंगे, तो हे देवी! आप यह निश्चित समझें कि मैं उनसे पहले वहाँ प्रवेश कर चुका हूँ।
English Commentary
This is the definitive vow of Lakshmana regarding the exile. He assures Kausalya that his shadow will not only follow Rama but precede him to clear the path. Whether it is the metaphorical "blazing fire" of death/danger or the literal forest (aranyam), Lakshmana declares he will enter it before Rama. This signifies his role as the protector who faces the danger first. It encapsulates the ideal of brotherhood in the Ramayana—total self-negation for the sake of the beloved. It foreshadows his 14 years of sleepless vigilance.

यह श्लोक लक्ष्मण के समर्पण की पराकाष्ठा है। वे कौसल्या से कहते हैं कि राम का गंतव्य चाहे जो भी हो—कठिन वन हो या मृत्यु समान अग्नि—लक्ष्मण वहाँ राम से 'पूर्वम्' (पहले) उपस्थित मिलेंगे। इसका अर्थ है कि वे राम के रास्ते के कांटों को पहले साफ़ करेंगे या राम पर आने वाले संकट को पहले स्वयं झेलेंगे। यह वनवास के लिए लक्ष्मण की मानसिक तैयारी का अंतिम उद्घोष है। यहाँ भाई का प्रेम सेवक और रक्षक के धर्म में बदल गया है।
