Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यथा एव राजा पूज्यः ते गौरवेण तथा हि अहम् ।
त्वाम् न अहम् अनुजानामि न गन्तव्यम् इतः वनम् ॥२-२१-२४॥
yathā eva rājā pūjyaḥ te gauraveṇa tathā hi aham |
tvām na aham anujānāmi na gantavyam itaḥ vanam ॥2-21-24॥
Translation
Just as the King is venerable to you with honor, so indeed am I. I do not permit you; you must not go from here to the forest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे राजा (दशरथ) तुम्हारे लिए गौरव (सम्मान) के योग्य और पूज्य हैं, वैसे ही मैं भी हूँ। मैं तुम्हें (वन जाने की) आज्ञा नहीं देती, तुम्हें यहाँ से वन नहीं जाना चाहिए।
English Commentary
Kausalya asserts her equal, if not superior, parental authority. She argues that if Rama is leaving solely to honor a parent, he is simultaneously dishonoring another parent of equal status. By explicitly stating 'I do not permit you' (na aham anujānāmi), she creates a deadlock in Rama's adherence to Satya (truth/obedience). If he leaves, he disobeys his mother; if he stays, he disobeys his father. This highlights the complexity of Dharma—it is not always a clear path, but often a choice between conflicting valid duties. She stands as the barrier between Rama and the forest.

यह श्लोक कौशल्या के संवाद का शिखर है। यहाँ वह अपने अधिकार का प्रयोग करती हैं। वह स्पष्ट करती हैं कि माता और पिता का स्थान समान है ("तथा हि अहम्"). यदि राम पिता की आज्ञा से वन जा रहे हैं, तो माता की आज्ञा से उन्हें रुकना चाहिए। जब दो गुरुओं (माता और पिता) की आज्ञाओं में विरोध हो, तो शास्त्र कहता है कि माता का स्थान भारी होता है। "न अहम् अनुजानामि" (मैं अनुमति नहीं देती) कहकर वह राम के वन गमन पर अपना 'वीटो' (veto) लगा देती हैं। यह राम के लिए सबसे कठिन धर्मसंकट उत्पन्न करता है।
