यदि त्वम् यास्यसि वनम् त्यक्त्वा माम् शोक लालसाम् ।
अहम् प्रायम् इह आसिष्ये न हि शक्ष्यामि जीवितुम् ॥२-२१-२६॥
yadi tvam yāsyasi vanam tyaktvā mām śoka lālasām |
aham prāyam iha āsiṣye na hi śakṣyāmi jīvitum ॥2-21-26॥
Translation
If you go to the forest leaving me absorbed in grief, I shall resort to fasting unto death (Prayopavesha) right here, for indeed I will not be able to live.

यदि तुम मुझे शोक में डूबी हुई छोड़कर वन चले जाओगे, तो मैं यहीं अनशन (प्रायोपवेश) करके प्राण त्याग दूंगी, क्योंकि मैं जीवित नहीं रह सकूँगी।
English Commentary
This represents the ultimate ultimatum. Kausalya threatens Prayopavesha (ritual fasting unto death), a solemn vow used in ancient India to protest injustice or end one's life. This is a massive escalation; she is essentially telling Rama that his departure will directly cause her death. For a man obsessed with Dharma, becoming the cause of his mother's death is an unthinkable sin. Kausalya utilizes this threat to physically and morally bind Rama to Ayodhya. It reflects her sheer desperation and the intensity of her grief, pushing Rama into an impossible corner.
