विलापन्तीम् तथा दीनाम् कौसल्याम् जननीम् ततः ।
उवाच रामः धर्म अत्मा वचनम् धर्म सम्हितम् ॥२-२१-२८॥
vilapantīm tathā dīnām kausalyām jananīm tataḥ |
uvāca rāmaḥ dharma atmā vacanam dharma samhitam ॥2-21-28॥
Translation
Then, Rama, the soul of Dharma, spoke words grounded in righteousness to his mother Kausalya, who was thus lamenting and miserable.

तब धर्मात्मा राम ने उस प्रकार विलाप करती हुई और दीन-दुखी माता कौशल्या से धर्मयुक्त वचन कहे।
English Commentary
The narrative describes Rama as Dharma-atma (the soul of righteousness) at this critical juncture. Despite the intense emotional pressure, Kausalya's tears, and her terrifying threats of death, Rama remains anchored in Dharma. He does not react with anger at the manipulation, nor does he capitulate out of sentimentality. The verse prepares the reader for his response, ensuring we understand that what follows is not cruelty, but a reasoned adherence to a higher cosmic law (Dharma samhitam). It highlights Rama's superhuman ability to remain composed amidst personal chaos.
