विपरीतः च वृद्धः च विषयैः च प्रधर्षितः ।
नृपः किम् इव न ब्रूयाच् चोद्यमानः समन्मथः ॥ ॥२-२१-३॥
Viparītaḥ ca vṛddhaḥ ca viṣayaiḥ ca pradharṣitaḥ । Nṛpaḥ kim iva na brūyāc codyamānaḥ samanmathaḥ ॥ ॥2-21-3॥
Translation
"The King is perverse in mind, old, and overpowered by sensory pleasures. Being instigated by lust (Manmatha), what would he not say?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"राजा (दशरथ) की बुद्धि विपरीत हो गई है, वे बूढ़े हो चुके हैं और विषय-भोगों (काम) ने उन्हें दबोच लिया है। कामदेव (मोह) से प्रेरित होकर वह क्या कुछ नहीं बोल सकते?"
English Commentary
Lakshmana launches a scathing attack on King Dasharatha. He labels the King as viparīta (perverse/confused), vrddha (senile), and vishayaih pradharshitah (enslaved by lust). He argues that the exile order is not a royal decree based on Dharma, but the ramblings of a man spurred by Samanmatha (lust/infatuation). Therefore, he implies, the order lacks moral legitimacy and should be ignored.

यह रामायण के सबसे क्रांतिकारी श्लोकों में से एक है। लक्ष्मण पिता दशरथ को सीधे चुनौती देते हैं। वह तीन विशेषण उपयोग करते हैं: 'विपरीत' (भ्रमित बुद्धि), 'वृद्ध' (सठियाया हुआ), और 'विषयैः प्रधर्षितः' (कामवासना का गुलाम)। लक्ष्मण का मानना है कि यह आदेश किसी राजा का नहीं, बल्कि एक कामुक बूढ़े का है जो पत्नी को खुश करने के लिए कुछ भी बक सकता है। अतः, इस आदेश को मानना धर्म नहीं है।
