ऋषिणा च पितुर् वाक्यम् कुर्वता व्रत चारिणा ।
गौर् हता जानता धर्मम् कण्डुना अपि विपश्चिता ॥२-२१-३०॥
ṛṣiṇā ca pitur vākyam kurvatā vrata cāriṇā |
gaur hatā jānatā dharmam kaṇḍunā api vipaścitā ॥2-21-30॥
Translation
Even the learned Sage Kandu, a knower of Dharma and observer of vows, killed a cow while carrying out his father's command.

धर्म को जानने वाले और व्रत का पालन करने वाले विद्वान ऋषि कण्डु ने भी पिता के वचन का पालन करते हुए एक गाय का वध किया था।
English Commentary
Rama employs a startling precedent to make his point. In Vedic culture, harming a cow is considered a grave sin. Yet, Rama cites Sage Kandu, a wise ascetic, who performed such an act solely to obey his father. Rama’s argument is radical: the duty to obey one's father supersedes conventional morality and religious taboos. He implies that the act of obedience purifies the action itself. By using such an extreme example, Rama illustrates that his exile—which seems unjust to Kausalya and Lakshmana—is actually the highest Dharma because it fulfills a father's command.

राम यहाँ एक अत्यंत कठोर और विवादास्पद दृष्टांत प्रस्तुत करते हैं। हिंदू धर्म में गोहत्या महापाप माना जाता है, किन्तु राम ऋषि कण्डु का उदाहरण देते हैं जिन्होंने पिता की आज्ञा पर यह कृत्य भी किया। राम का तर्क यह है कि 'पितृ-आज्ञा' का पालन अन्य सभी सामान्य धर्मों से ऊपर है। यदि पिता की आज्ञा हो, तो वह कार्य भी धर्म बन जाता है जो सामान्य परिस्थिति में अधर्म होता। यह राम की पितृ-भक्ति की पराकाष्ठा है, जहाँ वे यह सिद्ध कर रहे हैं कि पिता का वचन वेदों के विधि-निषेध से भी अधिक भारी है।
