धर्मः हि परमः लोके धर्मे सत्यम् प्रतिष्ठितम् ।
धर्म सम्श्रितम् एतच् च पितुर् वचनम् उत्तमम् ॥२-२१-४०॥
dharmaḥ hi paramaḥ loke dharme satyam pratiṣṭhitam |
dharma samśritam etac ca pitur vacanam uttamam ॥2-21-40॥
Translation
Dharma is indeed supreme in the world; Truth is established in Dharma. And this excellent command of my father is based on Dharma.
हिंदी अनुवाद
संसार में धर्म ही परम (श्रेष्ठ) है और धर्म में ही सत्य प्रतिष्ठित है। और पिता का यह उत्तम वचन धर्म पर ही आश्रित है।
English Commentary
This verse encapsulates the core philosophy of the Ramayana. Rama asserts the hierarchy of values: Dharma is the ultimate reality, and Truth (Satya) is the foundation of Dharma. Since King Dasaratha’s command stems from a pledge (Truth), it is intrinsically linked to Dharma. Therefore, obeying the father is not merely a family obligation but a cosmic necessity. Rama argues that the validity of the command comes from its adherence to Truth, making the execution of that command the highest religious duty.
हिंदी टीका
यह रामायण का एक 'सूत्र वाक्य' है। राम अपनी जीवन-दृष्टि स्पष्ट करते हैं: धर्म सर्वोच्च है। सत्य धर्म का आधार है। चूंकि पिता का वचन सत्य (प्रतिज्ञा) पर टिका है, इसलिए वह वचन धर्म है। अतः उस वचन का पालन करना ही ईश्वर और धर्म की सेवा है। राम यहाँ तर्क दे रहे हैं कि यदि उन्होंने पिता के वचन को झूठा होने दिया, तो वे धर्म को ही नष्ट कर देंगे। और जिस राज्य की नींव अधर्म (असत्य) पर रखी हो, वह राज्य उन्हें नहीं चाहिए।
