सम्श्रुत्य च पितुर् वाक्यम् मातुर् वा ब्राह्मणस्य वा ।
न कर्तव्यम् वृथा वीर धर्मम् आश्रित्य तिष्ठता ॥२-२१-४१॥
samśrutya ca pitur vākyam mātur vā brāhmaṇasya vā |
na kartavyam vṛthā vīra dharmam āśrity tiṣṭhatā ॥2-21-41॥
Translation
Having listened to (promised to fulfill) the word of a father, a mother, or a Brahmin, O Hero, one who stands by Dharma should not make it void (useless).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वीर! पिता, माता या ब्राह्मण के वचन को सुनकर (प्रतिज्ञा करके), धर्म का आश्रय लेने वाले पुरुष को उसे व्यर्थ (झूठा) नहीं करना चाहिए।
English Commentary
Rama redefines heroism for Lakshmana. Addressing him as Vira (Hero), Rama posits that true heroism lies in moral integrity, not just martial strength. Once a word is given or a command accepted from a superior (father, mother, or sage), negating it (vritha) is an act of cowardice and unrighteousness. Rama implies that his passive acceptance of exile is actually an active defense of his integrity. He binds himself to the code that a promise, once made/heard, becomes a law that governs the righteous man's life.

राम लक्ष्मण को 'वीर' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं और वीरता की नई परिभाषा देते हैं। असली वीरता युद्ध जीतने में नहीं, बल्कि अपनी प्रतिज्ञा (जुबान) पर टिके रहने में है। 'सम्श्रुत्य' का अर्थ है 'सुनकर स्वीकार कर लेना'। राम कहते हैं कि एक बार जब मैंने पिता की आज्ञा स्वीकार कर ली (भले ही वह कैकेयी के माध्यम से आई हो), तो अब पीछे हटना धर्म-विरुद्ध है। एक क्षत्रिय और धर्म-पालक के रूप में, अपने वचन को 'वृथा' (बेकार) करना उनके लिए मृत्यु समान है।
