Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनुमन्यस्व माम् देवि गमिष्यन्तम् इतः वनम् ।
शापिता असि मम प्राणैः कुरु स्वस्त्ययनानि मे ॥ ॥२-२१-४५॥
Anumanyasva mām devi gamiṣyantam itaḥ vanam । Śāpitā asi mama prāṇaiḥ kuru svastyayanāni me ॥ ॥2-21-45॥
Translation
Please grant me permission, O Devi, to depart from here to the forest. I make you swear by my life; please perform the rites of benediction (Svastyayana) for me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे देवि! यहाँ से वन को जाने वाले मुझे आप अनुमति प्रदान करें। आपको मेरे प्राणों की शपथ है, (मेरा मंगल चाहने के लिए) आप मेरे लिए स्वस्त्ययन (मंगल कृत्य/आशीर्वचन) करें।
English Commentary
Here, Rama employs a powerful emotional appeal to secure his departure. By asking for permission (anumanyasva), he validates her authority, but by swearing her by his own life (śāpitā asi mama prāṇaiḥ), he effectively binds her. He implies that stopping him or sending him away with tears would be inauspicious and harmful to his life force. He asks her to perform Svastyayana—rituals for well-being and safety during a journey. Rama is trying to shift her focus from the grief of separation to the active duty of a mother ensuring her son's spiritual protection. He forces her to choose his honor and spiritual integrity over her emotional attachment.
