धर्मार्थकामाः खलु तात लोके ।
समीक्षिता धर्मफलोदयेषु ।
ते तत्र सर्वे स्युरसम्शयम् मे ।
भार्येव वश्याभिमता सुपुत्रा ॥ ॥२-२१-५६॥
Dharmārthakāmāḥ khalu tāta loke । Samīkṣitā dharmaphalodayeṣu । Te tatra sarve syurasamśayam me । Bhāryeva vaśyābhimatā suputrā ॥ ॥2-21-56॥
Translation
O Dear One, in this world, Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), and Kama (pleasure) are indeed sought after. But strictly speaking, they are fruitful when grounded in Dharma. In this act (of obeying the father), all three are present for me without doubt, just as a single wife who is obedient, beloved, and bears good sons fulfills all three goals.

हे तात! इस लोक में धर्म, अर्थ और काम—ये तीनों जब धर्म के फल के रूप में प्राप्त होते हैं, तभी सार्थक हैं। जहाँ (पिता की आज्ञा पालन में) ये तीनों निश्चित रूप से विद्यमान हैं। जैसे एक ही पत्नी यदि आज्ञाकारिणी (धर्म), प्रिय (काम) और पुत्रवती (अर्थ) हो, तो वह तीनों फलों को देने वाली होती है।
English Commentary
Rama invokes the concept of Purusharthas to rationalize his decision. He argues that his decision is not just about dry duty, but encompasses the holistic goals of life. He believes that obeying his father satisfies all three: it is righteous (Dharma), it preserves the asset of truth/legacy (Artha), and it brings spiritual satisfaction (Kama). The metaphor of the wife is significant in ancient Indian sociology: a harmonious marriage was seen as the perfect vehicle for achieving all three life goals simultaneously. Rama asserts that adhering to truth is the ultimate synthesis of life's purpose, not a negation of happiness.
