सवै न शक्नोमि पितुः प्रतिज्ञा ।
मिमामकर्तुम् सकलम् यथावत् ।
स ह्यवयोस्तत गुरुर्नियोगे ।
देवाश्च भर्ता स गतिस्स धर्मः ॥ ॥२-२१-५९॥
Savai na śaknomi pituḥ pratijñā । mimāmakartum sakalam yathāvat । Sa hyavayostata gururniyoge । Devāśca bhartā sa gatissa dharmaḥ ॥ ॥2-21-59॥
Translation
Therefore, I am unable to leave this promise of my father unfulfilled in its entirety. For he is the Guru for both of us in command; and for you (Mother), he is the husband, the deity, the refuge, and the Dharma.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अतः मैं पिता की इस प्रतिज्ञा को पूर्ण रूप से और विधिपूर्वक पूरी न करने में समर्थ नहीं हूँ (अर्थात मुझे करनी ही पड़ेगी)। क्योंकि वे (दशरथ) हम दोनों के ही पिता हैं, आज्ञा देने में गुरु हैं, (माता कौशल्या के लिए) पति हैं, देवता हैं और वही (उनका) धर्म और गति हैं।
English Commentary
Rama reinforces the binding nature of the vow. He emphasizes that Dasharatha is the ultimate authority (Guru) regarding commands (niyoge) for both him and Lakshmana. Crucially, he turns the argument toward Kausalya, defining her relationship to Dasharatha: he is her husband (bhartā), her deity (devāśca), and her ultimate refuge (gati). By framing Dasharatha as Kausalya's "Dharma," Rama implies that her spiritual merit depends on obeying her husband, just as Rama's depends on obeying his father. He effectively enlists his mother in his cause by appealing to her own marital duty.

राम अब अपनी माता को संबोधित करते हुए एक निर्णायक बात कहते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि वे प्रतिज्ञा भंग करने में 'असमर्थ' हैं। यहाँ वे कौशल्या को उनके 'स्त्री-धर्म' (पतिव्रता धर्म) की याद दिलाते हैं। दशरथ केवल राम के पिता नहीं हैं, वे कौशल्या के 'भर्ता' (पति) और 'गति' (आश्रय/लक्ष्य) भी हैं। राम का तर्क है कि यदि कौशल्या राम को रोकती हैं, तो वे अपने ही पति की सत्यनिष्ठा को भंग करेंगी। एक पत्नी के रूप में कौशल्या का कर्तव्य है कि वे अपने पति के वचन को सत्य सिद्ध करने में सहायता करें, न कि उसे झूठा बनाने में। राम भावनात्मक बंधनों को धर्म की कड़ियों से काट रहे हैं।
