मयि चीर अजिन धरे जटा मण्डल धारिणि ।
गते अरण्यम् च कैकेय्या भविष्यति मनः सुखम् ॥ ॥२-२२-१३॥
Mayi cīra ajina dhare jaṭā maṇḍala dhāriṇi । Gate araṇyam ca kaikeyyā bhaviṣyati manaḥ sukham ॥ ॥2-22-13॥
Translation
Only when I wear bark garments and deerskin, bear matted locks, and have gone to the forest, will Kaikeyi's mind find happiness.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेरे चीर (वल्कल वस्त्र) और मृगचर्म धारण करने पर, तथा जटाओं का मण्डल (जटा-जूट) धारण कर वन में चले जाने पर ही कैकेयी के मन को सुख मिलेगा।
English Commentary
Rama details the specific conditions required to satisfy Kaikeyi. It is not enough to just leave; he must adopt the ascetic code completely. He lists the visual markers: cīra (bark robes), ajina (deerskin), and jaṭā maṇḍala (matted hair). He acknowledges that Kaikeyi’s manaḥ sukham (mental happiness) hinges on seeing him stripped of all royal symbols. Rama is willing to undergo this drastic transformation of appearance and lifestyle solely to grant peace of mind to his stepmother, showing his total lack of ego regarding his physical appearance or status.

राम यहाँ वास्तविकता को पूरी तरह स्वीकार कर रहे हैं। वे जानते हैं कि कैकेयी केवल उनके नगर छोड़ने से संतुष्ट नहीं होंगी, उन्हें राम को एक तपस्वी के वेश में देखना है। 'चीर' (पेड़ की छाल), 'अजिन' (मृगचर्म) और 'जटा मण्डल'—यह सन्यासी का वेश है। राम कहते हैं कि जब वे इस रूप में ढल जाएंगे, तभी कैकेयी का मन शांत होगा ('मनः सुखम्')। राम अपने सौतेली माँ की खुशी के लिए राजकुमार के वेश का त्याग कर भिखारी जैसा वेश बनाने को तत्पर हैं। इसमें कोई कड़वाहट नहीं, बल्कि एक तथ्य का कथन है कि "यदि इससे माँ खुश होती हैं, तो यही सही।"
