ऋषयो प्युग्रतपसो दैवेनाभिप्रपीडिताः ।
उत्सृज्य नियमाम् स्तीव्रान् भ्रश्यन्ते काममन्युभिः ॥२-२२-२३॥
ṛṣayo pyugratapaso daivenābhiprapīḍitāḥ । utsṛjya niyamām stīvrān bhraśyante kāmaman yubhiḥ ॥2-22-23॥
Translation
Even sages who perform terrible austerities, when afflicted by Destiny, abandon their strict vows and fall away, overcome by desire and anger.
हिंदी अनुवाद
उग्र तपस्या करने वाले ऋषि-मुनि भी दैव से पीड़ित होकर, अपने कठोर नियमों को त्यागकर काम और क्रोध के वशीभूत हो भ्रष्ट हो जाते हैं।
English Commentary
Shri Rama illustrates the overwhelming power of Destiny here. He argues that if even great sages, possessing immense spiritual strength and discipline, succumb to Destiny—abandoning their vows for lust or anger—then ordinary humans stand little chance. Implicitly referencing legends of sages who fell from grace, Rama suggests that Kaikeyi’s change of heart is not surprising. If Destiny can sway the most disciplined minds, Kaikeyi is easily susceptible. This is an attempt to make Lakshmana forgiving of human frailty in the face of cosmic forces.

श्रीराम यहाँ दैव की शक्ति का उदाहरण देते हैं। वे कहते हैं कि जब बड़े-बड़े तपस्वी, जिनके पास अपार आत्मबल होता है, नियति के आगे झुक जाते हैं और अपने मार्ग से भटक जाते हैं, तो साधारण मनुष्यों की क्या बिसात? विश्वामित्र जैसे ऋषियों के उदाहरण इतिहास में प्रसिद्ध हैं जो क्रोध या काम के कारण तप से च्युत हुए। श्रीराम का तर्क है कि यदि कैकेयी का मन बदला है, तो यह कोई आश्चर्य नहीं है, क्योंकि दैव के प्रभाव से बड़े-बड़े ज्ञानी भी नहीं बच पाते। यह लक्ष्मण को मानवीय त्रुटियों के प्रति क्षमाशील बनाने का प्रयास है।
