Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मा च लक्ष्मण सम्तापम् कार्षीर्लक्ष्म्या विपर्यये ।
राज्यम् वा वनवासो वा वनवासो महोदयः ॥२-२२-२९॥
mā ca lakṣmaṇa samtāpam kārṣīrlakṣmyā viparyaye । rājyam vā vanavāso vā vanavāso mahodayaḥ ॥2-22-29॥
Translation
Do not grieve, O Lakshmana, over this reversal of fortune (loss of the kingdom). Be it kingdom or exile, the residence in the forest is of great merit and outcome.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे लक्ष्मण! राज्य-लक्ष्मी के चले जाने (विपरीत होने) पर तुम शोक मत करो। राज्य हो या वनवास—इन दोनों में वनवास ही महान फल (महोदय) देने वाला है।
English Commentary
Shri Rama offers a revolutionary perspective to console Lakshmana, declaring 'Vanavaso Mahodayah' (Forest life is the greater fortune). While the world sees losing a kingdom as a fall, Rama argues that spiritually, the forest is superior. The kingdom brings luxury and anxiety, whereas the forest offers austerity, the company of sages, and spiritual growth. Rama attempts to reframe the situation for Lakshmana, urging him to view exile not as a punishment, but as a magnificent opportunity for higher evolution.

श्रीराम यहाँ लक्ष्मण को सांत्वना देते हुए एक क्रांतिकारी विचार रखते हैं: "वनवासो महोदयः"। सामान्य दृष्टि में राज्य मिलना 'उदय' है और वनवास 'पतन'। परन्तु श्रीराम कहते हैं कि वनवास आध्यात्मिक और नैतिक दृष्टि से राज्य से भी श्रेष्ठ है। राज्य में भोग और चिंताएँ हैं, जबकि वन में तप, ऋषि-संगति और आत्म-कल्याण का अवसर है। श्रीराम लक्ष्मण का दृष्टिकोण बदलना चाहते हैं—वे चाहते हैं कि लक्ष्मण वनवास को दंड नहीं, बल्कि एक महान अवसर (Great Opportunity) के रूप में देखें।
